Being so close to New York City is a great perk to living in New Jersey. There is a lot to do in NY that could make for some exciting trips, awesome weekday shopping, and fun weekends. What is great about NYC is that you don’t always need to know exactly where you are going. Sometimes walking around and figuring it out is half of the fun. If you are planner you might want to know where you are headed, but if you are up for an adventure you should go with an open mind.
- Shopping – NYC has some great shopping available. There are the high-end stores that will cost you an arm and a leg and there are the fun bodegas where you pick up an I Love NY change purse. No matter where you go you are likely to find some sort of little treasure that you wouldn’t find anywhere else.
- Museums – The main museum is the Museum of Natural History. The exhibits can change from time to time so it is always great to check it out and see what’s new. There are also many art museums with amazing paintings and sculptures that come from the creative minds in the area.
- Boat rides – There are many boat rides offered in NYC that will take you around and give you a tour. There are others that will take you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, though you can do that from New Jersey. NYC has a special air about it that makes learning while breathing in the smell of giant pretzels even more exciting than just watching it on TV.
- Restaurants – NYC offers many places to eat. You could go there every day for a year and still not eat at the same place twice. Everything from Italian, to Chinese, to Pubs; there is nothing this City doesn’t offer when it comes to food. It is always good to try something new especially when in NYC. That is the place where you should always try new things since it is incredibly easy to experience a new area or eatery. You might not be one for change, but check out what it has to offer before writing it off. You never know what great food you might try!

If you are from New Jersey or just going to school here, you have probably already found out that there is not too much to do outside of getting a cup of coffee and going shopping. Sometimes we need to look a little deeper to see what treasures we can find. We are very lucky considering we are neighbors with New York. There is plenty to do over there and all it takes is a quick ride and maybe a ferry. The following will give you some ideas as to some places you shouldn’t miss.
- The Bodies Exhibit – This is located in New York City and is great for those with strong stomachs. It shows the human body that has been preserved with a special substance that turns the tissue into a rubber-like consistency. You can see the inner workings of our bodies and is extremely educational as well as fascinating. The body is shown in many different form, so be aware of how graphic this exhibit will be.
- Museum of Natural History – Seeing everything this museum has to offer could take you a rather long time. It is safe to say you could spend an entire day here without seeing anything twice. The museum will also feature exhibits from time to time, so check out their schedule to see if anything you are interested in will be coming this way.
- Ripley’s Believe It or Not – Though this might not seem overly educational, it is certainly a lot of fun. This place holds many interesting records, facts, and oddities from all over the world. Those who have an interest in the television show would greatly benefit from seeing it in person. You do not have to spend an abundance of time here, but it is great to do. You could even conquer this in the same day as The Bodies Exhibit if you are feeling up to it. Once you get into the City you should get your time in since it can be a pain getting in and out.
Utilize the wonders NYC has to offer especially since New Jersey is so close. It would be a shame to miss the interesting opportunities while they are in your reach. They make great weekend activities as well as weekday since it tends to be a little calmer during the week. Try these places out and enjoy!

Students and their smart phones seem almost inseparable. Applications are exceedingly popular considering they can do everything from plan your day to save you money. New Jersey students may have some trouble at times figuring out where to go or what to do and there are plenty of applications to aid students in these dilemmas.
- Flixter – This application allows people to view movie times, trailers, and reviews. They can also browse through 65,000 DVDs. This is great for NJ students who are not sure what to do or where to go with their friends. It can be hit or miss if you just show up at the movies not knowing the times, so having this conveniently on the phone is a perfect application for NJ students.
- GasBuddy – We all know gas is expensive and in Jersey it seems like the prices are never stable. This concerns students who have limited income and need to find the lowest prices on gas possible. This application will allow students to check the prices so they know they are getting the best price.
- Barcode Scanner – Students are usually strapped for cash and are always looking for a bargain. There is surprisingly as application for this need. Barcode Scanner allows your phone to scan the barcode on an item and a program will bring up a list of where you can find the item including online along with the prices so you can see if it is cheaper elsewhere.
- Street View on Google Maps – This application will allow you to drag the “Pegman” wherever you would like to go and it will let you know how to get there. This is great for NJ students who want to go into the city for the day but are unfamiliar with the territory.
Applications are great for students, especially NJ students who cannot find something to do. There are many more applications available for students to download that will help them in everyday activities. What is nice about a lot of the applications is that they are free. It depends on which phone you have and the application you are downloading, but there are plenty free downloads for students, especially those in New Jersey.

New Jersey is a fast paced state to live in. We are in such close quarters with New York it is like the hustle and bustle of the city just flows on over to us. Because we tend to always be on-the-go it is nice to be able to relax and take in some of the beauty New Jersey has to offer. The following will give you some ideas about how to relax in the garden state.
- Get a massage – Jersey has some great spas and independently owned salons that offer licensed masseuses. Always sitting at a desk or typing can hurt your back and we don’t all have perfect posture so our muscles can get tense. Get those knots worked out and feel at ease.
- Go to the beach – It is no secret we live near the Jersey shore. It has to be the right weather but taking a walk on the beach in the sun and lying in the sand could be just what you need to unwind. Depending on where you live it could be quite a drive, so make a day of it and go with someone who makes you smile.
- Exercise – Working out is a great way to release tension and in New Jersey there are countless beautiful places to go for a jog or run. There are also plenty of gyms at great prices for you to join, but taking on a monthly fee might be more than your budget can handle.
- Work towards a free day – Students lead very busy lives and sometimes you just need a day to yourself. It is always nice to have a day where you do not need to worry about everything because everything is already done. Do what you can all week to create that free day so you can do anything you want. Get a massage, go to the beach, and exercise all in one day if you want. Depending on the amount of work you have it could take a lot of hard work to get there but when that day comes it will be well-worth it.
Do your best to try and relax at least once a week so you can be refreshed for the week ahead. It might seem like a hard task now but the rewards are immense.

New Jersey is a great place to grow up and a great place to go to college, but I am also biased since I did both. If you are new to Jersey or just need some ideas of where to spend a few hours, you have come to the right place. The following will give you some places where you can go to spend a few hours.
- Parks – New Jersey has some great park available. Some are large and some are small but they are great for just about anything. You can sit and do some work on your laptop if you get a signal, go for a run or a bike ride, or simply enjoy the beautiful outdoors and fill your lungs with fresh air instead of stuffy indoor air.
- Malls – Let’s face it, New Jersey has some great malls. There are the smaller strip malls and the larger department store malls. There is something for everyone. It is also a great place to walk around and do some window shopping
- Diners – New Jersey is known for its diners and what better place to study or meet with friends than over some good American food. Some diners even have wi-fi now so you can feel free to bring your laptop. It is also a great place to just sip coffee and study for hours. As long as you have a cup of coffee in front of you the staff will let you be and keep refilling it.
- Coffee houses – There are more than enough coffee shops in New Jersey. Some may even say there are too many coffee houses since there seems to be one on almost every corner. They are great because just like diners you can catch up with friends or have some quiet time to yourself where you can listen to music, do work, read, or think.
New Jersey has a lot to offer, but for those who have been here for so long it can be easy to see past the greatness and focus solely on the traffic and congestion that seems to be the essence of Jersey. The garden state is a wonderful place to live so take advantage of its beauty and try to let go of the stigma that is attached to our state.

Students choose to dorm mainly because the school is too far away from home to commute; however the added bonus of freedom is also temping. The only scary thing is that the students who have always had the comforting sound of their parents in the background no longer have that. They have to make their own judgments and suffer the consequences. Having had many friends who lived on- campus, I came up with list of success tips to help you adjust to your dorm life.
- Get to know your roommates – Having roommates can be a pain, but not knowing them is a mistake. These are people who will be around you and your belongings when you are not around. You need to be able to trust them and know your things won’t go missing if they have someone over while you are out.
- Set boundaries – College might seem like a free-for-all at first, but once the semester gets rolling you will soon see it is not a joke. There is work to be done so you will want to talk to your roommates about a schedule. Maybe you like to study during the week and party on the weekends. Talk to your roommates about not having people over during the week and if they feel like hanging out and being loud, if they could do that elsewhere during the week. Of course you will have to compromise with them, as well.
- Minimize your belongings – The less you keep in your dorm room the better. Even if you trust your roommates, there is always a chance something could go missing. Only keep what you absolutely need and nothing too expensive. The more you keep at home the better. You don’t want to come back from class and see something is missing.
Having a dorm at college is very exciting. It is a life commuters never get to experience so enjoy every minute of it, but do so responsibly. There is a lot of freedom when you have a dorm room so don’t take advantage of it. Use your time wisely and get your work in before the party starts. Congratulations to new students and continued luck to those already there!

New Jersey is full of great spots to study. Of course some are better than others, but you need to know the spots beforehand so you do not waste your time. Students in New Jersey like to get out of their homes and dorm rooms to get their work done and the following will fill you in on some great study spots used by local students.
- Dunkin Donuts – There is a Dunkin at every corner it seems. It offers free Internet which is great for students who need to do research. You can stay there as long as you need providing you purchase a drink or a snack. Many of them are 24 hours so you can go any time you need just to get away and find some alone time to complete your work.
- Starbucks – This is another great coffee and study spot. It is not 24 hours, but is a great place to get your caffeine fix and do some work. Some Starbucks require that you pay for Internet access while others offer it for free.
- Panera Bread – This is a popular eatery in New Jersey. It offers Internet access and large tables for studying. You can eat breakfast lunch and dinner here while doing your work so you can work all day and they will leave you alone as long as you purchase one item.
- Your local library – Libraries are a great place to study and also offer free Internet. You can bring your own computer or use the ones there. All kinds of books are also at your fingertips for all of your research needs. Sometimes it is nice to use books instead of the Internet. You can learn more information when reading through the material because you cannot simply search for it.
- Any park – The outdoors is actually a great place to get some studying done while getting some fresh air. With the advances in wi-fi you can achieve an Internet signal almost anywhere. Getting your work done while outdoors is great for those students who are easily bored with their surroundings. Give it a shot and see if studying outside helps you.

New Jersey is home to some great colleges and universities that people travel from all over the world to attend. Some of them are very hard to get into, but they are certainly worth looking at and apply to just in case. You will need to have impressive transcripts in order to be accepted. If you are still in high school and have hopes of attending any of the following schools, keep in mind the work you will need to build up your transcripts. The following will list for you the top ten colleges located in the garden state.
- Princeton University located in Princeton New Jersey
- Rutgers, the state university of New Jersey located in New Brunswick
- New Jersey Institute of Technology located in Newark
- Montclair State University located in Montclair
- The College of New Jersey located in Ewing
- Seton Hall University located in South Orange
- Rowan University located in Glassboro
- Steven’s Institute of Technology located in Hoboken
- University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey located in Newark
- Monmouth University located in West Long Branch
Above are some great schools students would be proud to attend. They do not accept students easily and knowing this before you apply to colleges is very helpful. You need to make sure those transcripts are up to par if you are going to apply to any of the schools listed above. It will take a lot of work to get in and even more work to stay in, but to earn a degree from these schools is a great accomplishment.
Students often forget in high school that they need to really apply themselves in order to get into a good school. New Jersey high schools are often good at preparing students for the journey of college, but students need to make sure they make the best of the high school education offered. Start to think about your high school transcript and what you can do to improve it whether it is raising your GPA or adding some volunteer work, you should do whatever it takes so you have a fair shot at any of the aforementioned schools. Good luck!

With the economy the way it is and jobs being lost and gained, the job market has been turned upside and the game has changed. What you once thought might have made this top ten list may not be on it and jobs you never thought would be on it, might have made it. Take a look and see what the top ten careers are in New Jersey.
- Physical Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Project Managers
- Assistant Managers
- Salespeople and Cashiers
- Registered Nurses (RN) – includes Travel Nursing.
- Store Managers – retail, coffee shops, etc.
- Business Analysts
- Accountants and Senior Accountants, CPAs and other Tax Professionals
10. Software Engineers and Developers
Physical therapists are always needed as long as people are aging and/or receiving surgery. This is not the easiest of fields and does require a lot of work in order to be successful. Project manager is also a great career choice, but you need to be on your game if you want to make it in this field. Salespeople and cashiers might not sound like the most lucrative of jobs but the fact is there is a paycheck and that something not everyone is receiving at this point in time.
Registered nurses are and always have been very important. They are also needed in the hospital and have a plethora of information that could help any patient. Business analyst is a great but tough career. There is a lot of important work to be done but as with any career, you really need to know what you are doing. Accountants and careers of that nature are important, but if you listen to anyone who has these jobs many will attest to boredom on a frequent basis. I have heard it described as being in a hard math class every day with tests every day. If you are into accounting then go for it! Software engineers and developers will always be needed with all of the advances in technology being made. This field will take a lot of work to get a degree in, but will certainly pay off in the end. Good luck choosing!
